9. The Crucible

Stumbling down the mountain with the initiates, Alexis rebuffs a friendly approach from Christos Zeus, a self-proclaimed mutt allegedly linked to House Zeus. Vorex assembles the group at the River Styx, warning that Kharon—Artemis’s heir and feared Chthonic assassin—will ferry and hunt them during the circuit.

Thrown into the icy current, the initiates fight the river and one another. Christos panics beside Alexis as Kharon’s boat appears. After Kharon touches Christos’s forehead, unseen torment rips him apart; he drowns while Kharon turns predatory attention toward Alexis. Nyx urges Alexis to flee, and she reaches shore, shivering and shocked.

At the academy entrance, General Cleandro coldly warns against “separating the weak,” ignoring Kharon’s role. With one initiate dead, he cancels rest and orders the class to Lost Classical Lore.

Professor Augustus, heir of Ares, arrives with his razor-toothed raccoon protector, Poco. He declares purpose-driven rigor, then singles out Alexis, condemning the idea of women in the crucible and linking her to a despised legacy. Switching into Latin, he drills the class on the Minotaur and Mycenae; Alexis answers correctly yet draws his disdain.

The session ends with Cleandro mandating study time before Pine’s class. Numb with grief and cold, Alexis slips into the library and, clutching Nyx, finally collapses into sleep amid lingering dread.
