29. The Consequences

Overview

Alexis attacks Theros at graduation, triggering a lethal blood-based Chthonic power that Patro helps her stop. Hades and Persephone reveal she is Hercules, their lost daughter. Kharon and Augustus expose a binding betrothal via accepted gifts, exploiting a legal loophole. Despite outrage, Alexis agrees to join the Assembly of Death and the Gladiator Competition, graduates, and vanishes.

Summary

On the coliseum sands, Alexis tackles Theros, enraged that he tried to murder her and Helen. Inside Theros’s shield, their fight turns brutal until stabbing pain blooms in Alexis’s chest and Theros convulses—her blood-linked power is hurting him. Patro intervenes, coaching Alexis to breathe; as her chest pain eases, Theros stops screaming.

Hades arrives demanding answers. Patro declares Alexis manifested unknown Chthonic power and likely inflicts pain with her blood. As the crowd erupts, Alexis realizes past chest pains coincided with deaths she caused, accepting she is Chthonic. Hades confronts Zeus about a dead child; Vyco recounts rescuing baby Hercules during a Titan attack, blacking out amid blood, and losing the child. Patro confirms Vyco’s truthfulness, but Alexis senses omissions.

Hades and Persephone kneel, recognizing Alexis as their daughter—Hercules. Their reunion is cut short when Zeus invokes honor customs and suggests an alliance by marriage. Persephone rejects it, but Kharon announces Alexis is already betrothed to him and his partner under the new law, citing two red-velvet gift boxes and Alexis’s acceptance by opening and using the contents. Patro confirms he isn’t lying.

Augustus steps forward as the partner; together they argue the law bars only listed Chthonic names, not Alexis. Alexis recognizes the wolves who questioned her jewels as them, realizing they orchestrated the months-long betrothal ploy. Zeus then cites Article Three requiring Chthonics to join the Assembly of Death and compete in the Gladiator Competition. Amid protests, Alexis chooses to accept.

During the resumed ceremony, General Cleandro declares the initiates citizens; Alexis, named Hercules, vows to serve Sparta in the Assembly of Death. With Hades and Persephone beside her and Kharon and Augustus looming, Alexis, shattered and numb, chooses to leave. She whispers “Domus” and leaps away.
