31. Wicked Bonds

Alexis, numb with guilt and rage, processes down the aisle in Sparta, crowned and draped for a state wedding. Hades and Persephone beam with pride as her birth parents, while House leaders, including Zeus, watch. Friends—Patro, Achilles, Charlie, and Helen—look alarmed. Fluffy Jr., Nyx, and Poco linger near the dais, underscoring the surreal pageantry. Kharon and Augustus flank Alexis with predatory intensity, and the elderly officiant is revealed as the woman who once delivered Charlie to Alexis’s trailer.

Hostility flares between Alexis and her betrotheds: Augustus insists she chose their protection; Alexis denies it and resists their touch. The officiant’s voice deepens unnaturally as she commands the oath. The trio recite Latin vows, and a brutal surge of pain spears their hearts, suggesting an unusually potent bond. When it passes, the officiant warns that such a powerful union will carry dark consequences.

They exchange distinctive serpent rings and attached diamond bracelets that are sealed permanently. As Augustus clasps Alexis’s bracelet, he and Kharon see the ravaged scars on her wrists; fury and concern sharpen the tension.
