91. Persistence is a virtue …
Overview
Vorian Atreides escapes Andros and Hyla by luring them into the open desert and using his activated shield belt to summon a sandworm. The worm devours Agamemnon’s twin offspring, ending their immediate threat but leaving Vorian grieving Griffin, Mariella, and Ishanti. The chapter closes with Vorian recognizing that the Harkonnen-Atreides breach may now be impossible to heal.
Summary
After Andros and Hyla kill Griffin Harkonnen, Vorian Atreides flees across the rocks near the weather station on Arrakis. Vorian realizes that barricading himself inside the station would be useless because the genetically enhanced twins could tear through it, so Vorian climbs toward a ridge despite the exposed terrain offering few escape options.
Andros and Hyla follow with unnatural ease, taunting Vorian and demanding that Vorian justify being spared. Vorian considers trying to reach their aircraft but knows the startup would take too long. Vorian instead turns with a Maula pistol and fires at the twins, missing Andros but wounding Hyla in the chest. Hyla recovers quickly, and when the weapon jams, Vorian throws it away.
With the twins gaining, Vorian runs from the rocks into the open dunes. Vorian deliberately abandons the stealthy desert-walking rhythm that Ishanti taught him and instead runs in a way likely to attract a sandworm. Vorian then activates his personal shield, drops the vibrating belt on the sand, and races toward a distant rock outcropping, hoping the shield and rhythmic footsteps will summon a worm before Andros and Hyla catch him.
Vorian reaches the rock island just ahead of the twins. Andros and Hyla are so focused on Vorian and the discarded shield belt that Andros only tosses the device aside as a sandworm erupts beneath them. The worm swallows both children of Agamemnon, ending their pursuit and leaving Vorian alone in the desert.
Safe for the moment but stranded without supplies, Vorian reflects on the deaths surrounding his attempt to live peacefully on Arrakis. Vorian mourns Ishanti, Griffin, and Mariella, and recognizes that Griffin’s death will likely deepen the ancient feud between the Harkonnens and Atreides beyond any hope of repair. Exhausted by centuries of conflict, Vorian waits for the worm to leave before planning to return to the weather station and use the aircraft to depart Arrakis for good.
