82. The Misborn have been …

Overview

Raquella responds to Dorotea’s threat of exposing the Sisterhood’s forbidden computers by staging an emergency assembly that traps the entire order in debate. While Raquella buys time, Valya and loyal Sisters dismantle and smuggle the machines into a hidden Misborn refuge in the jungle.

The chapter deepens the Sisterhood’s internal schism while showing Raquella choosing secrecy and preservation over transparency, even as Imperial and Butlerian danger closes in.

Summary

Reverend Mother Raquella recognizes that the Sisterhood faces an immediate threat because Dorotea, after surviving the poison trial and gaining access to Raquella’s old memories, knows about the illegal computers hidden in the breeding-record caves. Since Dorotea intends to expose the technology to the Butlerians, Raquella fears that mobs or Imperial soldiers will soon come to Rossak and destroy the Sisterhood’s work.

The crisis worsens inside the Sisterhood itself. Dorotea has allies, especially among newly awakened Reverend Mothers, and nine of them demand access to the restricted upper caves to search for proof. Raquella refuses, posts extra Sorceress guards, and accuses them of insubordination, but she understands that secrecy now looks like guilt and that Karee Marques’s predicted schism is unfolding.

Raquella confers with Karee, Valya, Sabra Hublein, and other trusted Sisters who know the deepest secrets, then gives them instructions. At dawn, she summons the entire Sisterhood to an emergency meeting, inviting open debate and promising to hear all complaints. Her guards lock the assembly chamber doors, keeping more than a thousand Sisters inside for as long as necessary.

The meeting is a deliberate diversion. While Raquella holds the Sisterhood’s attention, Valya and a dozen loyal Sisters enter the hidden computer chamber behind the holographic barrier. They dismantle the forbidden machines, remove the gelcircuitry storage modules, and lower the components through shafts to workers waiting near the canyon floor.

Valya leads the hidden transport into the jungle with urgency and discipline. Raquella has directed them to a lost Misborn refuge beneath a limestone sinkhole, where deformed exiles once saved her from the Omnius plague. Because the Misborn are gone and the place remains unknown, Raquella chooses it as the safest hiding place for the computers and their invaluable genetic records.
