98. Each person mourns …
Overview
Vorian Atreides accepts responsibility for Griffin Harkonnen's death by recovering his body, sending it home to Lankiveil, and writing a respectful message to the Harkonnen family. His decision not to reveal the twins' involvement closes that immediate threat while preserving Griffin's honor.
With Mariella gone and Arrakis emptied of purpose for him, Vorian abandons the planet and boards a VenHold cargo ship. The chapter turns Vorian from a man fleeing old consequences into one who finally acknowledges them, even as he chooses exile and uncertainty.
Summary
After returning to the isolated weather-monitoring station on Arrakis, Vorian Atreides kneels beside Griffin Harkonnen's body and mourns the senseless death. Griffin's death reminds Vorian of Ishanti and of the long chain of innocents harmed by enemies pursuing Vorian, including Mariella.
Vorian decides that leaving Griffin's body to the desert would be dishonorable. Because Griffin had defeated Vorian in a duel and spared his life, and because Vorian recognizes his own part in the disgrace suffered by House Harkonnen, Vorian wraps the body in a polymer tarpaulin and carries it onto the flier.
Vorian flies back to Arrakis City and arranges for Griffin's remains to be transported to Lankiveil. A cargo operator questions the expense of shipping a body across space, but Vorian insists that Griffin belongs with his family and home, accepting the financial and moral responsibility.
While the body is prepared for shipment, Vorian writes a message to Griffin's family. Vorian praises Griffin's honor and courage, admits that Griffin found him and that they resolved their differences, but chooses not to reveal the role of Agamemnon's surviving children. Instead, Vorian says Griffin was killed by desert bandits and that Griffin has been avenged.
After the sealed container is loaded onto an outbound cargo ship, Vorian stays in Arrakis City for three days and realizes he has nothing left there. Unable to return to Kepler without endangering his remaining family, Vorian signs aboard a VenHold cargo ship carrying melange and leaves Arrakis without knowing where he will go next.
