1. After being enslaved …

Overview

Manford Torondo leads Butlerian followers in destroying a derelict fleet of thinking-machine warships, reinforcing his crusade against all remnants of Omnius. The discovery of dead human captives aboard deepens his conviction that machines are inherently evil and must never be tolerated again.

The chapter establishes Manford's charisma, extremism, physical dependence on Anari Idaho, and growing concern that humanity is drifting back toward forbidden technology. His hostility toward salvage operations and even training machines signals that the Butlerian movement may soon turn its zeal against human society itself.

Summary

Manford Torondo leads six Butlerian vessels to a derelict squadron of twenty-five machine warships found outside a League star system. The ships had been left drifting after the fall of Omnius and never reached their target, but Manford considers them abominations that must be destroyed as a symbolic and practical continuation of the anti-machine struggle.

Swordmaster Ellus confirms the fleet is exactly where Gilbertus Albans's Mentat prediction placed it, reinforcing Manford's faith in human mental superiority. Swordmaster Anari Idaho advises destroying the ships from a distance, but Manford insists on boarding the largest vessel so he can personally witness the enemy remnants before eliminating them.

Because Manford has no lower body from the bombing that killed Rayna Butler, Anari carries him in a special harness. Anari delays his boarding until scouts confirm the ship is safe and the life support has been restored, prioritizing Manford's protection over his impatience. The scouts report deactivated combat meks and a cargo hold filled with long-dead human captives.

Inside the cold robotic ship, Manford sees the skeletons and interprets them as evidence of machine cruelty, possibly tied to captive transport or experimentation. Anari, disturbed by the sight, destroys several deactivated combat meks with her pulse-sword. Manford approves her violence against the machines but criticizes the Swordmaster School on Ginaz for keeping functional meks for training, revealing his stricter intolerance of any advanced machine use.

On the control deck, Butlerians prepare the ship for destruction. Manford rejects any thought of salvaging the vessels, condemning humans such as Josef Venport and the VenHold Spacing Fleet for refurbishing machine ships. Before leaving, Manford and Anari place an icon of Rayna Butler on the control panel and recite the Butlerian creed.

The Butlerian strike vessels withdraw, and timed charges detonate the entire robot squadron in a chain of explosions. Watching the destruction, Manford feels the mission has served Rayna's legacy and the Butlerian cause, then declares that their work is done.
