Overview

Griffin Harkonnen’s abduction brings him face-to-face with Vorian Atreides, the man his family blames for generations of disgrace. Their confrontation exposes the depth of the Harkonnen-Atreides feud, while Vorian’s weary regrets fail to soften Griffin’s inherited hatred. Because the conflict disrupts the Freemen, the Naib condemns both men to be abandoned in the desert, turning a family vendetta into an immediate fight for survival.

Summary

Griffin Harkonnen, drugged and hooded, realizes his captors are not simply hiding him in Arrakis City. He awakens aboard a noisy aircraft, recognizes the voices of his abductors, and demands to know where he is being taken. A raspy-voiced woman refuses to answer and drugs him unconscious again.

Griffin next wakes bound to a chair in a rock-walled chamber thick with spice fumes and human odors. When the hood is removed, he sees Vorian Atreides, who initially says he has never seen Griffin before. Griffin reacts violently and identifies Vorian as the man he has been hunting.

The Freemen Naib questions Griffin, and Griffin names himself as a Harkonnen. Vorian realizes Griffin is descended from Abulurd Harkonnen. Griffin accuses Vorian of ruining House Harkonnen across generations, blaming him for Abulurd’s exile to Lankiveil and for Xavier Harkonnen’s disgrace after the Jihad.

Vorian answers with regret rather than denial. He says he loved Xavier and Abulurd, but after the Battle of Corrin he could not forgive Abulurd and could only prevent his execution by sending him away. Griffin rejects this explanation, believing Vorian could have used his influence to save Abulurd and restore the family’s honor.

Vorian argues that clinging to revenge for generations is destructive and asks whether Griffin would continue the feud against Atreides descendants forever. Griffin insists House Harkonnen will not be satisfied until vengeance is achieved. The Naib, angered that this ancient feud has been brought to the tribe, orders Griffin and Vorian separated and confined until the next day, when both will be cast into the desert and their water left to Arrakis.
