Chapter 15

On their way from the Amyrlin’s study, Egwene and Nynaeve argue about limits on channeling versus survival as they hunt the Black Ajah. Nynaeve insists on nonlethal defenses and self-control, while Egwene vows not to die without using the Power.

Outside their rooms, a crossbow bolt nearly kills Egwene, nicking her ear. Nynaeve seizes saidar and immobilizes the fleeing assailant with Air, copying a trick once seen from the Amyrlin. When they reach him, the man collapses, already dead from a dagger in his chest. The crossbow is missing, suggesting a second culprit.

Sheriam arrives, tests the body, and reveals he is a Gray Man—one of the Soulless who give up their souls to the Dark One and slip unnoticed until they strike. She notes none have entered Tar Valon since the Trolloc Wars and orders strict secrecy, covering the body with an Air-formed dome.

Egwene, fearing discovery of the attack’s link to her door, rushes to fetch her cloak and finds the quarrel gone, heightening the sense of a second assassin. Sheriam brusquely dismisses them; Nynaeve’s probing questions earn a sharp rebuke.

Afterward, Egwene and Nynaeve process the attack, discussing weaves and the Five Powers to steady themselves. Nynaeve warns Egwene to remember the danger constantly. They note Sheriam never asked who stabbed the Gray Man, and retreat to Nynaeve’s room to talk further.
