Chapter 47

Mat departs the Royal Palace with Tallanvor, suppressing the urge to run after realizing Gaebril may not suspect him. Tallanvor probes Mat about Tar Valon and Sheriam, hinting at veiled messages and his uncertainty. When Mat tests Tallanvor’s loyalties, Tallanvor declares absolute service to Queen Morgase alone, then returns to the Palace.

At The Queen’s Blessing, Mat announces he is leaving for Tear. He questions Basel Gill about Gaebril’s sudden rise during Caemlyn’s riots and his appointment to Elaida’s former post. Gill shares unease about Gaebril’s influence and pervasive bad dreams in the city but offers little concrete proof.

Mat then bluntly states that Gaebril ordered Lord Comar to kill Elayne, Egwene, and Nynaeve, describing Comar. Gill recognizes Comar’s reputation as a deadly former Guardsman. Mat explains he could not accuse Gaebril before Morgase, given Gaebril’s standing and her favor.

Thom proposes seeding a rumor strong enough to reach Morgase’s ears, trusting her political acumen to expose Gaebril once alerted. Gill agrees to start the gossip chain through Gilda, promising it cannot be traced back to him.

Thom reflects that his old passion for Morgase has cooled, rejecting any direct warning that could cost him his head. Choosing action that may save the women, Thom decides to travel with Mat. They plan to hurry to Aringill and take a fast boat to Tear, while Mat wryly “wagers” he will win against Gaebril.
