Chapter 5

Perrin wakes to a Trolloc attack and rushes out with his axe. Lan and Moiraine engage the enemy with sword and flame as burning trees light the camp. Perrin spots Leya outside Moiraine’s hut and fights toward her, wounding and killing Trollocs on the way.

A Myrddraal descends and fells Leya with a casual stroke. As the Fade’s eyeless gaze freezes Perrin, a flood of wolves answers in his mind. Embracing the name Young Bull, Perrin overcomes fear, hamstrings the Myrddraal, and half-severs its head. With the Fade dying, linked Trollocs collapse or thrash, and Perrin joins wolf packs methodically hamstringing and finishing Trollocs.

After the rout, wolves pursue and drag down another fleeing Myrddraal at heavy cost. Perrin mourns with them, then forces himself to sever the wolf-bond for the moment. Survivors stare at his golden eyes; Lan hails the men, and Loial names ta’veren. Perrin insists the fallen wolves be buried with the dead, overruling Uno, while Masema proclaims the wolves a sign of the Dragon Reborn.

Perrin and Min find Rand brooding. Rand admits he failed to control saidin—nearly burning the camp or bringing the mountain down—and could only set trees ablaze. He sensed the Trollocs like the taint but too late to warn anyone. Perrin, nursing guilt over the wolves and Leya, claims they managed without Rand.

Lan brings the exhausted Moiraine, who uses an angreal to Heal Perrin’s wounds and the injured wolves she could find. She then discovers Rand’s Falme wound has reopened. Despite warning about the Prophecies’ ambiguity, she Heals him as far as she can and collapses. Lan carries her away, rebukes Rand to accept duty, and orders everyone to bed, noting plans must be made for whatever comes next.
