The group enters Dairein, noting Tar Valon soldiers holding back Whitecloak provocations. Verin deflects rumors about Falme and a false Dragon, then leads the party over the marvel of the bridge toward the city. Egwene feels both awe and a dawning sense that Tar Valon, not Emond’s Field, now anchors her life.

Inside Tar Valon’s bustle, Verin cautions Egwene, Nynaeve, and Elayne that their recent displays of the Power could mean death or stilling if repeated in the Tower, ordering silence and obedience. Nearing the White Tower, Hurin declines rest, insisting he must sail upriver to inform Shienar of the truth at Falme, including Rand’s identity, and departs after offering future help.

At a side gate, Verin quietly sends word ahead, then has Mat’s litter brought to the stableyard. Sheriam, Mistress of Novices, arrives with Accepted and workers. Verin brusquely silences Egwene and orders Mat taken away to a secluded place, warning he is dangerous to himself and others. Sheriam confirms the Tower watches every arrival and departure and agrees to keep the novices contained.

Verin hurries off to seek the Amyrlin with a leather sack taken from Mat’s litter, while Sheriam grimly places the three under strict confinement: bread, cold broth, water, and absolute silence, threatening harsher penalties. The Accepted escort them to their rooms—Theodrin, herself a wilder, handles Nynaeve without baiting; Faolain pointedly predicts stilling. Egwene and Elayne comply, anxious for Mat’s Healing and fearful of the Tower’s judgment.
