Overview

Summary
Morning light fills Gentry’s loft as Slick and Cherry watch over the comatose “Count” on the stretcher. Gentry, skipping his usual talk of the Shape, explains that the slab the decker is jacked into is likely a single lump of aleph-class biochip: near-infinite, interactive storage isolated from the matrix. Cherry notes the man seems to be paying to remain in constant REM, unlike typical wireheads.
Gentry recalls that trying to output the aleph’s content produced a disturbing gray figure, and he diverts power to recharge batteries and heat the room. Cherry and Slick discuss the poisoned wasteland of Dog Solitude and Slick’s dependence on the Factory, while the grid power finally returns, warming the loft and the patient.

Concluding that indirect output is blocked, Gentry decides a direct sensory link may bypass the defenses and insists that Slick, not Gentry, make the connection.
