Summary
Gentry, desperate to capture the macroform of a mysterious data “Shape,” pressures Slick Henry to don a trode-net and jack into the signal feeding a comatose man on a stretcher. Slick recalls his arrival in Dog Solitude and Factory, underscoring his isolation and mistrust, then gives in and connects.
Slick finds himself in a pristine estate at dawn, a stark contrast to Dog Solitude. Inside, he meets a lucid Bobby Newmark—once called the Count—who assumes Kid Afrika might be behind the intrusion but quickly extracts the facts: Cherry is nursing Bobby at Factory, and Gentry split the signal to let Slick see this construct.
Bobby assesses the risk and emphasizes Factory’s isolation. He warns Slick that if anyone other than Kid Afrika arrives, their only chance is to jack Bobby directly into the matrix. He confirms his identity and ensures Slick will remember the instruction.
