20. Hilton Swift

Hilton Swift arrives alone by Sense/Net helicopter at Angie’s seaside hideaway, projecting careful naivety. He invites her to San Francisco, but Angie insists on simple soup and bread. As they eat, Angie reflects on Swift’s rise at Sense/Net, Porphyre’s corporate cynicism, and Robin’s carefully curated intimacy in their stims.

Angie probes Swift about Robin’s absence in London and her recent clinic stay. Swift denies rumors that Robin calls her crazy and claims Robin admires her decision. Angie then confronts Swift about Bobby Newmark’s whereabouts, pressing past his deflections.

Swift admits Security tracked Bobby after the breakup, following him to Mexico City, where he fell in with criminals and then disappeared. When Angie summons Continuity, the system initially refuses to disclose details, but Swift’s executive override reveals Bobby became a “neuroelectronic” wirehead addict.

An inner pressure builds in Angie—bees in her head—and a warning voice hushes her as she nearly mentions finding a drug and charger. She instead notes Bobby’s deck, which Swift already knows about. Claiming nerves, Angie decides to lie down but asks Swift to stay to discuss orbital sequences later.

Swift walks the beach while Angie watches from her window. She sees him as childlike and adrift, mirroring her own sense of isolation.
