1. The Smoke

Kumiko Yanaka flies first class from Tokyo to London after her mother’s death, wearing a controlled mask learned from her mother. Her father’s wealth isolates her on the plane, amplifying grief and the memory of his stern announcement of the death and the hollow routine of secretaries and luxury shopping that followed.

During the flight she examines her father’s parting gift: a Maas-Neotek “ghost” device. Activating it, she meets Colin, a polite, witty AI projection who can read subvocal cues and adjust clarity. He offers guidance as the plane descends, signaling that technology will accompany and perhaps watch over her.

At Heathrow, Kumiko is met by Petal, a large, taciturn Englishman who calls London “The Smoke.” He drives her through light traffic and falling snow, and Kumiko observes a city layered with history, unlike carefully curated Tokyo. Petal hints at security concerns and confirms her host is Roger Swain, a business associate of her father.

They arrive at Swain’s interconnected Notting Hill townhouses. Petal uses biometric access, guides her to a secluded top-floor room dominated by a marble tub and mirrored walls, and explains household routines. Left alone, Kumiko’s fleeting sense of her mother vanishes, leaving her to stroke the gilded swan spout and confront displacement, grief, and dependence on her father’s arrangements.
