19. Under The Knife

Mona staggers through a hotel morning in severe wiz-crash as Prior informs her that Eddy has been “bought out” and is headed to Macau. Recognizing Eddy’s suitcases leaving without him, Mona concludes he’s likely dead. Prior asserts control, saying she now works for them.

Alone, Mona slots an Angie stim to blunt the crash, drifting through a crafted European idyll with Robin Lanier. Prior interrupts, forces food on her, and announces they are going to a Baltimore clinic run by Gerald, a cosmetic surgeon, where she won’t be eating for a while.

At a modular office labeled “Gerald Chin, Dentist,” Mona pockets a shockrod hidden in Michael’s jacket, weighing her chance to resist. She notes Prior’s knowledge gaps and recalls why Eddy would never abandon his prized luggage, reinforcing her belief he was killed.

Inside the shabby clinic, Gerald, masked and suited like a paramedic, ushers her to a chair and comments on her exhaustion. As Mona fumbles for the shockrod’s switch, Gerald administers a measured aerosol sedative. Darkness closes in, and Mona’s last thoughts fuse memories of money, control, and the invasive certainty of what’s about to be done to her.
