Chapter 54
Overview
Zevander rescues Dorjan to the undercroft, then discovers a secret Solassion–Imperial Guard plot: Maevyth was seized for a ritual and Rykaia taken as leverage. In the ritual hall, Maevyth has already escaped, leaving Magelord Akmyrios blinded.
Dolion reveals Maevyth is Zevander’s mate; Rykaia identifies Melantha as her attacker. After securing Rykaia’s escape to Eidolon and plans for Calyxar, Zevander fights through guards and portals after Maevyth toward Aleysia.
Summary
As revolt churns outside, Zevander storms Dorjan’s chambers, sobers the prince with vivicantem, and escorts him to the undercroft and the Validyne Holdfast. In the royal apartments, Zevander endures King Jeret’s probing while maintaining his Leoric disguise before King Sagaerin dismisses him to keep watch.
In the tunnels, Zevander cloaks himself in fog and eavesdrops on Captain Zivant conspiring with General Loyce. They reveal Maevyth was seized for a ritual to control the flame, that the bloodstones are the true aim, and that Rykaia has been taken to force Zevander’s hand. They also discuss Cadavros, the uprising’s value as a distraction, and Jeret’s offer of pardons.
Zevander follows Zivant through a hidden, warded door to a vast ritual complex. Inside, sablefyre scars the halls; two mages lie as ash, and Magelord Akmyrios writhes eyeless. Maevyth’s whistle lies near the altar—evidence she escaped and turned the flame on her captors. While Zivant pursues one corridor, Zevander breaches a warded gap and finds Rykaia groggily waking beside dead Solassion guards.
Dolion intercepts Zevander, urges him to pursue Maevyth, and then reveals a vision: Maevyth is Zevander’s mate, and they will have a son. Zevander rejects the manipulation but cannot deny his bond. He revives Rykaia with vivicantem; she identifies Melantha—the flammellian from The Hovel—as her attacker and likely Maevyth’s captor-turned-escort back to Aleysia.
With Imperial Guards breaking the ward, Zevander orders Rykaia through a portal to Eidolon. Dolion promises to flee that night to Calyxar with Rykaia (and Allura), protected by the stones and accompanied by Torryn. As the ward falls, Zevander incinerates pursuing guards with sablefyre and steps through a portal after Maevyth, driven by the revelation of their mating bond.
