Settling into Elowen’s spare room, Maevyth and Zev undress for bed, their banter revealing old scars and mutual defensiveness. Zev offers the floor, but they share the narrow mattress. An awkward brush of bodies leads to embarrassment, then to protective anger as they recall Felix’s assault. Seeking warmth, Zev gathers Maevyth against him; tension mounts until tempers flare and she lashes out. He calms her, and the fight abruptly shifts into a charged kiss, dissolving her defenses.
