Chapter 30

Maevyth awakens in a cold cell at Castle Eidolon and is confronted by a vision of Aleysia, whose eyes turn black and teeth sharpen before the apparition dissolves into vapor, leaving Maevyth fearing Aleysia is dead. Regaining composure, Maevyth discovers she is locked in a cage.

Across the corridor sits Rykaia, Zevander’s sister, who is curious that Zevander brought a mortal to Eidolon—something he never does. Rykaia refuses to free Maevyth, explaining the keys would alert Zevander, and shares food to stave Maevyth’s hunger. They trade uneasy banter about the castle, drakes, and another prisoner, Dolion.

Dolion awakens and greets Maevyth, revealing his great age and that time differs from Mortasia. He insists Maevyth isn’t technically a prisoner, but also won’t release her. When Maevyth insists she must return for Aleysia, Dolion warns the woods are guarded and notes she is herself in grave danger.

Rykaia reports Zevander has gone to attend the king in Costelwick, leaving Maevyth to wait. Dolion offers a magical puzzle book to pass the time and asks for an item to scry Aleysia, but Maevyth has nothing. He then examines Maevyth’s palm, identifying a rare sigil he calls Osflagulle, proof of extraordinary magic tied to her bloodline.

Dolion explains powerful mages are searching for Maevyth, not for her actions but for her blood to rebirth an ancient weapon. Though Maevyth doubts him, Dolion asserts that Eidolon’s wards and four royal assassins will protect her better than anywhere else. Torn between fear for Aleysia and the threat closing around her, Maevyth remains confined, uncertain whom to trust.
