Summary
Maevyth stands before Witch Knell’s bone-and-briar arch, recalling the forest’s history as a site of sacrifice and banishment. She reflects on being found as a newborn at the arch with a black rose, adopted by the Bronwicks, and losing her grandfather to the woods. A royal notice confirms her adoptive father, a Sacred Men missionary, has been killed, leaving Maevyth and her sister Aleysia under their hostile step-grandmother Agatha.
Fearing her limited future—forced marriage or life as a silent Red Veil under cruel Sacton Crain—Maevyth’s anger at the Red God surges. On the letter’s back she has written “The Red God isn’t real,” then drops it past the arch. The words change to “God is Death,” startling her. When Maevyth reaches for the page, a jagged bone slashes her forearm; her blood sizzles black as a shimmering veil ripples across the forest, and the wind carries the letter deeper within.
A childlike voice from the trees whispers her name and repeats “God is death,” moments before a blast of darkness throws Maevyth back. Ravens explode from the canopy; one is skewered on a bone spike. Drawn by the raven’s eerie silver eyes and its suffering, Maevyth pries it free, injuring herself further in the struggle.
Realizing the bird is mortally wounded, Maevyth chooses mercy, using her small knife to end its pain. The act marks her first deliberate killing and crystallizes the chapter’s stakes: oppressive faith closing in, sorcery stirring at Witch Knell, and Maevyth’s determination to act with compassion despite fear and danger.
