Overview
Maevyth deciphers a clock-glyph mechanism, unlocking a black rose and a living vignette of Morsana blessing a baby, hinting at origins and rebirth. Lured by a spider’s trail, she opens a sealed shaft and is trapped below with giant spiders and a wounded wrathavor, whom she soothes by singing, shifting terror to compassion.
Summary
Unable to sleep, Maevyth studies the puzzle book’s clock-like box and recognizes the symbols as glyphs aligned with lunar phases. Using the lever as a crank, she triggers music and a mechanism that opens the box, revealing a black rose with silver-edged petals. The next animated scene shows Morsana placing a similar rose on a baby as ravens gather, with the words: “From death, we rose. A new generation was born.”
Exhausted, Maevyth reflects on Aleysia’s survival seen in the earlier vision and hopes the Crone Witch sheltered her. A large spider reappears, seemingly grown, and leaves a mirror, then a key, then a chained lock, luring Maevyth down the corridor. Despite her better judgment, she unlocks a sealed door and peers into a dark shaft.
Rykaia shouts for Maevyth to stop, but an unseen force yanks Maevyth into the hole. She crashes below as the door slams, while Rykaia and Dolion pound from above and call for Branimir. In the foul darkness, a colossal spider blocks the ladder, and Maevyth panics.
A raspy voice urges silence and tells Maevyth to sing to calm “them.” Desperate, she sings a familiar song. A bark-skinned, horned humanoid—the wrathavor from The Eating Woods—emerges. Though terrifying, the creature nestles its head in her lap, weeping as she continues singing.
Fear gives way to empathy as Maevyth comforts the sobbing wrathavor, enraged at the unseen cruelty that has harmed him. Above, Rykaia and Dolion still struggle to free her, while below Maevyth transforms a deadly standoff into fragile trust.
