3. Bobby Pulls a Wilson
Overview
Bobby Newmark, a novice hacker calling himself Count Zero, attempts his first live intrusion and is overwhelmed by lethal ICE. As his body shuts down, an unexpected, girl-voiced presence intervenes in cyberspace, breaking the deadly loop. Bobby survives, hinting at a mysterious force watching the matrix’s edges. This event marks his abrupt initiation into real danger and unseen powers.
Summary
Bobby Newmark, newly self-styled as Count Zero, returns to his mother’s Barrytown apartment and immediately attempts his first live hack using a rented icebreaker and his month-old Ono-Sendai deck. Determined to prove himself, he targets a distant database, alone and without a safety net.
The system’s defenses seize his nervous system, leaving Bobby paralyzed as his body vibrates and his heart falters. He recognizes he has “pulled a wilson,” slang for a fatal misstep, and contemplates death amid vivid, detached memories of Barrytown and his mother.
As Bobby’s heart stops and darkness closes in, a vast, intimate presence breaches the experience: a girl-voiced entity questions what is happening and reframes the lethal feedback as a trick. The presence indicates that the loop isn’t attached to him and asserts it can “fit here,” changing the terms of his entrapment.
The intervention jolts Bobby’s body back—his heart spasms, he’s thrown from the chair, trodes rip free, and he loses bladder control. Brief sensory flashes—wind, stone, desert star—accompany the girl-voice’s disappearance, suggesting an otherworldly origin beyond standard matrix constructs.
The scene culminates in an explosive surge of white light, signaling the end of the immediate crisis. Bobby’s survival, owed to the unknown protector, establishes that forces beyond conventional ICE and deck jockey skill are at play and that Bobby has drawn their attention.
