22. Jammer’s

Jackie brings Bobby to Jammer’s nightclub safehouse and introduces him to Jammer, a former cyberspace jockey with a custom deck. Bobby recounts his failed run, Two-a-Day, and the bombing that killed his mother. Jammer agrees to host them, expecting Beauvoir later, and offers his powerful deck for a cautious spin.

Jackie and Bobby jack tandem. High above the matrix grid, two grey disturbances form and speak as Legba and Ougou Feray. They warn of approaching enemies and mention the Virgin drawing near. Shaken, Jackie orders a disconnect and immediately concludes Lucas is dead, citing how Legba should have manifested if Lucas still lived.

In Jammer’s office, Jackie refuses a drink and insists the entities are real, grounded in pacts her group understands. Jammer disputes the voodoo framing, suggesting projected illusions, rogue viral intelligences, or AI fragments; he proposes calling Lucas but Jackie opts to lie low until Beauvoir arrives.

Left to mind Bobby, Jammer admits he quit before such entities appeared and remains wary. He goes to sleep. Bobby explores the empty club, fighting nerves and boredom, daydreaming about being “Count Zero.”

Restless, Bobby peeks through the foyer glass at the bustling market outside. He spots Leon, who locks eyes with him and, unusually, smiles—signaling a looming intersection with Bobby’s past amid their precarious hiding place.
