21. Highway Time

At dawn in Rudy’s rural compound, Turner surveys a lineup of vehicles and settles on a surplus armored hovercraft. Sally brings coffee and confirms the hover’s legality. Angie, bruises fading, joins them in the kitchen. Turner tells Angie that Rudy’s scans found something implanted in her head; she says her father had it put there because she “wasn’t smart enough.”

By noon, Turner fuels the hover. Rudy hands over worn New Yen and says a language on a tape seems like an African creole. He also reports Maas has publicly announced the “accidental” death of Dr. Christopher Mitchell. Turner and Angie depart after an awkward farewell that stirs Turner’s guilt over missing his dying mother.

On the highway, Turner mentally replays the failed extraction and the devastating strike, trying to trace who ambushed them and why. Angie contrasts life with a company to Turner’s freelancing. She then reveals the implant triggers dreams: she sometimes perceives a boy in danger and, more profoundly, vast “bright” presences that tell a story of an awakening intelligence that later split into parts.

They pull off near Virginia to eat. Discussing Rudy, Turner says some people get “stuck” if they miss a necessary life jump; he thinks Rudy missed his. Turner sketches Rudy’s wasted potential and their ailing mother. Angie says she never knew her own mother and questions her father’s character, deflecting fuller judgment as she’s only seventeen.

That night they sleep in the hover behind an abandoned drive-in in Pennsylvania. Angie briefly and tentatively touches Turner as he dozes; he feigns deeper sleep and withdraws into uneasy dreams colored by Mitchell’s biosoft. At dawn, he wakes to Angie singing an old ballad, and they prepare to continue east toward the Sprawl.
