16. Legba

Roused by Rhea, Bobby dresses in her brother’s flamboyant clothes and rides a voice-driven Damascus Rolls with Lucas. In transit, Lucas explains voodoo as parallel to tech: Jackie as a “deck,” Danbala as a “program,” and the matrix as “the world.” He warns Bobby to respect their next contact, a landmark operator favored by Legba.

In the Sprawl, Lucas brings Bobby to a fortified, ruined brownstone. The Finn, a gaunt fixer with feral manners, lets them in; upstairs lie three dead attackers. He insists he stands behind his goods but someone expensive has targeted him.

In a shielded white room, Bobby recounts his failed run. The Finn says cyberspace has changed in recent years: top jockeys now make deals with “allies,” ghosts and voices crowding the grid. He scoffs at labels yet acknowledges Lucas’s perspective aligns with this shift.

Pressed about the faulty biosoft icebreaker, the Finn refuses to name sources, then concedes it came from Wigan Ludgate, an ex-cowboy who raided weak networks in Africa, later pursued a mystical quest in cyberspace, and moved to high orbit. Over a decade, couriers sporadically sold the Finn middling software and odd assemblage “sculptures” credited to the Wig; recently a courier brought the biosoft breaker that Beauvoir bought.

The Finn recalls rumors of earlier teams chasing similar anomalies, then ends the meeting, planning to dispose of the bodies via an organ bank. As dawn lightens, Lucas tells Bobby the Finn is close to Legba, reinforcing that the rules of communication and cyberspace are changing around them.
