12. Café Blanc

Leaving the Louvre, Marly senses an unseen, citywide structure adjusting around her, the subtle machinery of Virek’s wealth surveilling and shaping her movements. She chooses to sit at Café Blanc, a place tied to Alain, as an act of reclaiming her Paris and acknowledges a surprising lightness: Alain’s shabby lies have broken her depression.

Paco, the former child from the park and now Virek’s operative, approaches. Marly frames herself as a tool in an immense machine driven by Virek’s will and money, and Paco neither denies nor explains, only observes. He notes they watch both Marly and her contact from the brasserie, and that someone likely placed the hologram in the contact’s path.

Marly says she accepted Alain’s price; Paco predicts he will raise it and agrees to supply cash. He reveals they monitored the negotiation via the contact’s bead-microphone and even engineered a power failure that sent him to the restroom, where he cursed Marly. They still do not know who the broadcast was meant for.

Recognizing Virek’s omnipresent mechanism, Marly nonetheless commits to move forward, feeling unexpectedly free of Alain’s hold even as she accepts her role within Virek’s design. The scene closes with Paco’s dismissive quip about French coffee, underscoring his cool detachment.
