33. Wrack and Whirl

Marly drifts within the Freeside cores, entranced by the Boxmaker’s frenetic assembly. Jones arrives, filthy and frantic, trying to force a red vacuum suit on Marly because he cannot secure Wigan Ludgate elsewhere. Marly refuses, intent on the Boxmaker’s work.

A screen flares with Paco, who coolly announces Josef Virek’s death, Marly’s termination, frozen credit, and that anyone in the former Tessier-Ashpool cores is trespassing. The threat of corporate force recasts their situation. Jones abandons his plan to knock Marly out and fit the suit.

The Boxmaker ejects a new piece. Marly catches a box lined with leather cut from her own jacket, holding seven numbered holofiche tabs, a Gauloise wrapper, and a Napoleon Court matchbook—intimate tokens that mark the close of her quest and the Boxmaker’s enigmatic recognition.

Later, as Marly and Jones search the maze of corridors for Wigan Ludgate, Jones recounts how Wigan sold the boxes in New York and was sometimes paid in software, even biosoft. Wigan would download it into the cores, then resell it, saying “God likes to talk to Himself,” implying the fragmented intelligence was passing pieces of itself through commerce to reunite within the cores.
