CHAPTER TWENTY
Overview
Amir and Farid reach a devastated Kabul, confronting the Taliban’s menace and the city’s ruin. An old beggar, Dr. Rasul, reveals intimate memories of Amir’s mother, deepening Amir’s personal stakes. At a bleak orphanage, director Zaman admits a Talib official took Sohrab a month earlier and points Amir to Ghazi Stadium to find him.
Summary
Driving from Jalalabad to Kabul, Amir sees war wreckage and hears Farid’s grim accounts of villages destroyed and friends lost. Entering Kabul, he is shocked by rubble, child beggars, and a city stripped of trees and life. A Taliban patrol passes, and Farid warns Amir never to draw their attention.
An old beggar confronts their fear, warns about the Taliban’s provocations, and then quotes Hafez. He reveals himself as Dr. Rasul, a former literature professor who knew Amir’s mother, Sofia Akrami. Dr. Rasul shares vivid details about her—her love of almond cake and tea, her eloquence, and her fear that great happiness invites loss—giving Amir the first intimate memory of his mother.
Amir and Farid find the new orphanage in Karteh-Seh. Zaman, the director, first denies knowing Sohrab, then relents when Amir reveals family ties and Hassan’s name. Zaman shows them the dire conditions: overcrowding, hunger, no heat or water, and children sharing scant blankets.
In his office, Zaman reluctantly confesses that a Taliban official periodically arrives with cash and takes a child—usually a girl. Farid attacks Zaman in outrage, but stops when he sees the terrified children watching. Zaman explains his impossible choice: if he refuses one, the Talib takes many more; he swallows the shame to feed the rest.
Zaman reveals the crucial fact: the Talib took Sohrab a month earlier. He directs Amir to Ghazi Stadium, saying the official will appear at halftime wearing black sunglasses. Amir and Farid leave as Zaman calms the children, his broken glasses back on.
