CHAPTER TWELVE

Overview

Amir finally speaks with Soraya, but General Taheri pointedly warns him about gossip. Soon after, Baba is diagnosed with advanced, inoperable lung cancer that spreads to his brain, and he refuses treatment. Shaken, Amir asks Baba to seek Soraya’s hand; the Taheris agree. Soraya confesses a past elopement, which Amir accepts while keeping his own guilt buried.

Summary

Amir frames his yearning for Soraya through the Afghan notion of yelda, sneaking respectful, brief exchanges at the Fremont flea market. He finally speaks with her about books and his writing, encouraged by her mother, Jamila, but General Taheri interrupts and discards Amir’s story, warning that the community thrives on gossip.

Soon Baba develops a worsening cough. A county hospital X-ray reveals a lung “spot,” and after delays and an aborted visit with a Russian-born doctor, Iranian pulmonologist Dr. Amani diagnoses advanced, inoperable oat-cell carcinoma. Baba refuses chemotherapy despite Amir’s pleas, insisting no one be told.

Baba continues the flea market until he collapses with a seizure; scans show brain metastases. Community members, including the Taheris, visit at the hospital. Soraya comforts Amir in the hallway, their first touch underscoring his need for support. Baba rejects palliative radiation and is discharged home.

Confronting mortality, Amir asks Baba to perform khastegari for Soraya. Baba, frail but resolute, visits the Taheris, and the general consents. Before formalities proceed, Soraya privately confesses she once ran away and lived with a man in Virginia, a scandal that led to her mother’s stroke and the family’s move. Amir acknowledges being stung but affirms his wish to marry her.

As Soraya’s secret is aired and accepted, Amir pointedly withholds his own deepest guilt about Hassan, recognizing Soraya’s courage while remaining unable to match it.
