CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Overview

Amir reels from Rahim Khan’s revelation that Hassan was Baba’s son, confronting Baba’s hypocrisy and his own complicity. Recognizing a generational cycle of betrayal, Amir resolves to rescue Sohrab in Kabul as a path to atonement. He commits to the journey and asks Rahim Khan to contact the Caldwells.

Summary

At dusk in Peshawar, Amir leaves Rahim Khan’s and struggles to absorb the truth that Hassan was Baba’s son. In a teahouse, he reexamines long-ignored signs—Baba fixing Hassan’s harelip, defending him, weeping when Ali left—and feels his life’s furniture rearranged, exposing years of lies and thefts.

Amir condemns Baba’s hypocrisy against his own creed about theft, recognizing that Baba stole Amir’s right to a brother, Hassan’s identity, and Ali’s honor. He draws a painful parallel: like father, like son—both betrayed those who loved them. Amir considers whether his past cowardice helped drive events that doomed Hassan and wonders if their lives might have been different had he not forced Ali and Hassan out.

Realizing Rahim Khan summoned him to atone for both his and Baba’s sins, Amir accepts that the cycle of secrets must end. He reflects on Baba’s charge that others always fought his battles and decides, even at thirty-eight, to fight his own by seeking Hassan’s son, Sohrab, in Kabul.

Returning to Rahim Khan’s apartment, Amir finds him praying, then declares he will go to Kabul and asks Rahim Khan to call the Caldwells. He leaves resolved: a way to be good again lies in rescuing Sohrab and confronting the past.
