CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Overview

Amir awakens in a Peshawar hospital, grievously injured after rescuing Sohrab. He receives Rahim Khan’s farewell letter, which acknowledges past secrets, frames Baba’s charity as redemption, urges forgiveness, and provides money.

Warned of Taliban sympathizers, Amir leaves early. The touted caregivers, John and Betty Caldwell, prove fictitious, forcing Amir and Sohrab to decamp to Islamabad.

Summary

Amir drifts in and out of consciousness in a Peshawar hospital, tended by Nurse Aisha and head-and-neck surgeon Dr. Faruqi. Faruqi details Amir’s injuries: ruptured spleen (removed), punctured lung with chest tube, seven broken ribs, facial lacerations including a split upper lip, and an orbital fracture; Amir’s jaws are wired shut.

Farid visits with Sohrab. Amir thanks them and learns Rahim Khan has disappeared, leaving a letter and a safe-deposit key. That night, Amir reads the letter: Rahim Khan knew of the assault and Amir’s betrayal, explains Baba’s harshness as guilt over loving two sons, frames Baba’s generosity as redemption, urges Amir to forgive himself, and provides money. Amir is moved and medicated for pain.

As Amir slowly mobilizes, Farid warns that Taliban allies in Peshawar may target him. A suspicious bearded man’s earlier visit reinforces the danger. Amir asks Farid to find “John and Betty Caldwell,” the supposed Peshawar caregivers Rahim Khan mentioned for Sohrab.

Amir and the withdrawn Sohrab pass time playing panjpar; the boy rarely speaks and flinches from touch. Amir attempts friendship, recalling Hassan, but Sohrab keeps his distance. Dreams of Assef unsettle Amir, underscoring his guilt and fear.

Intent on leaving, Amir plans to settle bills with Rahim’s funds and place Sohrab with the Caldwells. Farid returns with news from the U.S. consulate: John and Betty Caldwell never existed. With no safe options in Peshawar, Amir withdraws the money, settles the hospital, and, fearing Taliban reach, accepts Farid’s help. They drive to Islamabad, where Amir hopes to regroup and find a path forward for Sohrab.
