CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Overview

Amir meets the Talib leader to reclaim Sohrab and discovers the man is Assef. Assef forces a brutal one-on-one fight, nearly killing Amir. Sohrab intervenes with a slingshot, destroying Assef’s eye, allowing Amir and Sohrab to escape with Farid. Amir’s beating becomes a painful step toward long-delayed atonement.

Summary

Farid delivers Amir to a guarded mansion in Wazir Akbar Khan but stays in the car. Inside, Amir waits under armed watch for the Talib in white he saw at the stadium. The man arrives, taunting Amir with his violence in Mazar and questioning his loyalty. Amir insists he only wants the boy, Sohrab.

Sohrab is brought in dressed to dance, made up and wearing ankle bells, revealing his exploitation. After the performance, the Talib clutches the boy and suddenly recognizes Amir. Removing his glasses, he reveals himself as Assef. Amir offers money for Sohrab, but Assef, reveling in power and ideology, refuses.

Assef proposes terms: Amir can earn Sohrab by settling their “unfinished business.” He dismisses the guards and dons brass knuckles, starting a vicious beating. Amir, inexperienced, is hurled and struck repeatedly, ribs and face breaking, while Sohrab screams. Amid the pain, Amir unexpectedly laughs, feeling a perverse sense of peace and long-sought reckoning for his past cowardice.

As Assef prepares another blow, Sohrab intervenes. Using his ever-kept slingshot, he loads a brass ball from the toppled table and, echoing Hassan’s old defense, fires into Assef’s eye, blinding him. Assef collapses, shrieking. Sohrab helps the shattered Amir to his feet, and they exit past the guards rushing to Assef.

Outside, Farid runs to them, horrified by Amir’s injuries. He carries Amir to the truck as Assef’s screams continue. With Sohrab at his side and Farid driving them away, Amir loses consciousness, gravely wounded but having finally faced his past and rescued Hassan’s son.
