CHAPTER NINE

Overview

After his lavish birthday, Amir rejects his gifts as “blood money” and resolves to remove Hassan from his life. He frames Hassan by planting cash and a watch. Hassan falsely confesses to protect Amir, but Ali decides they must leave. Despite Baba’s forgiveness and pleas, Ali and Hassan depart, ending the household’s old life.

Summary

In the aftermath of his thirteenth birthday, Amir opens his presents without joy, seeing them as “blood money” bought by his winning the kite tournament and his silence about Hassan’s assault. Baba gives him a prized bicycle and a wristwatch, but only Rahim Khan’s notebook feels untainted. Amir fixates on removing the source of his guilt: either he or Hassan must go.

When Ali and Hassan present Amir with a beautifully illustrated Shahnamah, Amir feels unworthy but later buries the gift among his unwanted presents, deepening his shame. The next morning, after waiting for Ali and Hassan to leave for the bazaar, Amir plants cash and his new watch under Hassan’s mattress.

Summoned to Baba’s study, Amir watches as Baba asks Hassan if he stole the money and watch. Hassan quietly says yes, a final sacrifice that spares Amir exposure. Baba unexpectedly forgives Hassan, defying his own creed that theft is the worst sin. Ali, aware of the broader truth and determined to protect Hassan, announces they are leaving despite Baba’s forgiveness.

As a rare summer rain begins, Baba pleads and even weeps, but Ali’s decision stands. Amir watches from his window as Baba drives Ali and Hassan to the bus station. He does not intervene, and the car’s departure marks the end of Amir’s familiar life and his bond with the boy who once first spoke his name.
