CHAPTER SEVEN

Overview

Amir overcomes his fear and wins the Kabul kite tournament, securing the blue kite as proof for Baba. While retrieving it, Hassan is cornered and assaulted by Assef as Amir secretly watches and does nothing. Hassan returns the kite, and Amir presents it to Baba, receiving long-sought approval while suppressing immediate guilt.

Summary

On the snowy tournament morning, Hassan recounts a reassuring dream about a monsterless lake, easing Amir’s anxiety under Baba’s watchful gaze. They launch their kite and join a sky crowded with contenders. As the day wears on, Amir’s confidence grows as he steadily cuts opponents, his hands bloodied by the glass string.

By late afternoon, Amir faces a formidable blue kite. Driven by a desperate need for Baba’s approval and imagining redemption, he maneuvers and finally severs the blue kite’s line. Baba cheers from the rooftop—Amir’s greatest moment—while Hassan vows to run the fallen blue kite “for you a thousand times over” and sprints away.

Searching for Hassan, Amir learns from a merchant that boys have chased him. Amir finds Hassan trapped in an alley by Assef, Wali, and Kamal. Hassan refuses to surrender the kite he ran fairly for Amir. Assef orders his friends to hold Hassan and assaults him. Amir, paralyzed by fear and craving his father’s validation, hides and does nothing.

After Assef and the others leave, Amir meets a shaken, limping Hassan, who silently hands him the blue kite. Avoiding eye contact and words about the attack, they part. Amir returns home, presents the kite, and is embraced by a jubilant Baba. In Baba’s arms, Amir momentarily forgets his complicity, choosing approval over confronting what happened to Hassan.
