Chapter 34

Overview

Facing Estelle’s imperiat, the team rejects a direct assault and pivots to flight. Berenice fabricates missing gravity definitions while Orso invents a twinned chamber that mimics a lexicon at range. Sancia successfully test-flies, then proposes a shadow-cloaked infiltration to create a diversion and open a path to the Mountain.

Summary

Debating how to reach the Mountain before Estelle uses the imperiat, the group dismisses direct assault. Berenice reveals captured gravity plates from Candiano assassins, but Sancia senses their scrivings are broken—likely disabled at Estelle’s lexicon. Berenice proposes fabricating only the missing definitions instead of rebuilding the whole design.

As Sancia relays the plates’ confused “mass” requests, Berenice and Orso infer Estelle’s gravity model: everything exerts gravity and the plates reorient it by defining an alternate mass above. Berenice undertakes to forge four key definitions. Meanwhile, Orso drafts Claudia and Gio to build a twinned heat chamber: by making his in-wall chamber aware of contents (the test lexicon) and twinning it to a portable duplicate, the empty box “believes” it holds the same lexicon and projects its definitions remotely.

They finish the twin-box and verify it by twinning a heating rig; the portable chamber scorches a test box, proving the effect. Orso realizes this technique could extend scriving’s range and hints at forming a Scrappers-aligned front, if they survive.

Berenice completes the four definitions and loads them into the test lexicon. The plates activate and query Sancia for mass location and density. Sancia sets “up” as location and a reduced density; she rises, floats, then cancels the effect, confirming partial flight control. The team deems it a risky but workable success.

For the assault, they must wheel the twinned chamber within a mile and a half of the Mountain. Sancia proposes breaching the Candiano walls by stealth: wearing light-absorbing cubes as a moving shadow, she will approach the east walls, create a major distraction, and use her door expertise to get them through, while Orso and Berenice stage the cart at the southwest gates.

Who Appears

  • Sancia Grado
Proposes a stealth breach, communicates with the broken gravity rig, test-flies after Berenice’s fixes, plans to create a distraction at the Candiano walls.
  • Berenice
Deciphers Estelle’s gravity logic and fabricates four missing definitions to reactivate the plates under severe time pressure.
  • Orso Ignacio
Designs a twinned chamber to mimic a lexicon remotely, coordinates construction, tests it, and outlines the assault logistics.
  • Claudia
Assists building and scriving the twin-box; questions strategy and highlights the technique’s broader value.
  • Giovanni (Gio)
Helps construct and test the twinned chamber; voices tactical concerns and feasibility issues.
  • Estelle Candiano
Offstage antagonist; her deactivated definitions crippled the plates, prompting the team’s workaround and urgent assault plan.
