Chapter 41

Overview

Sancia enters Clef’s failing mind, meets Claviedes, and learns Valeria is a world-altering process. Claviedes restores the key to open the box, sacrificing his connection to Sancia. Valeria manifests, freezes the scene, disables Estelle’s ascension, and departs with a warning. Estelle dies, Sancia recovers the imperiat and inert Clef, while Dandolo troops seize the Commons and capture Orso as Berenice escapes.

Summary

Wrenched from the Mountain mid-ritual, Sancia finds herself inside a cavern of walls leading to a vast machine. Beneath it lies a mutilated man who speaks with Clef’s voice. He reveals himself as Claviedes—the human mind powering the key—and explains Sancia can enter because Clef is failing.

Claviedes confirms Valeria can stop Estelle’s ritual and that he once helped build Valeria, a reality-altering process rather than a god. He warns Sancia of a timeless war between makers and the made, urges careful choices, and chooses to restore the key to its original state so it can open the box—sacrificing their bond. The machine stirs and everything goes white.

Sancia returns to the Mountain as the box unlocks. A blinding eruption subsides into muted light, and Valeria appears as a towering, golden, armored figure. Time freezes. Valeria acknowledges Sancia’s debt, then nullifies Estelle’s golden dagger, ending the elevation. Before departing, Valeria warns that an old monster in Tevanne will not forgive Sancia.

Time resumes. Tribuno is dead; Estelle, bleeding and bewildered that her ascension failed, collapses and dies. Sancia frees a wounded, unresponsive Gregor, takes the imperiat, and retrieves Clef—now silent.

Elsewhere, Dandolo soldiers flood the Commons. Orso orders Berenice to flee toward the crypt while he stalls them. Moments later, the troops arrest Orso as Berenice escapes into the city.
