Chapter 31
Overview
Sancia awakens bound in Candiano custody and discovers Valeria has replaced her object empathy with the ability to see and argue with scrivings. She experiments, trying to open her shackles by interrogating their logic. Tomas returns furious after a failed find and threatens drastic action, but a heavily scrived intruder arrives—revealed as Estelle.
Summary
Alone and restrained, Sancia slowly reconstitutes herself and realizes her senses have changed. Instead of overwhelming object empathy, she now perceives scrivings as silvery, logical constellations embedded in matter and can toggle this second sight off and on. She resolves to use it to escape.
Testing the ability, Sancia engages her shackles, which are scrived to crave union and fear separation. She questions their logic for the "key-calm" that allows release and learns of a non-key alternative called a "secret"—something partly related to breath, but not solely breath. Progress is slow and frustrating.
Tomas Ziani storms in, enraged by a failed search that yielded only an empty capsule. Sancia notes the sinister red glow of the imperiat on him. Enrico urges caution, arguing Sancia’s value and the risk of damaging the plate in her skull, while Tomas pushes to cut it out immediately.
As Sancia continues probing the shackles for how the "secret" is delivered—via the mouth but not saliva—she senses potent scrivings approaching from the corridor. The door opens. Armed men freeze as a woman steps inside, and Tomas recognizes her: Estelle.
