Chapter 35
Overview
Gregor awakens after death in a cellar, revived and mentally constrained by scrivings orchestrated by his mother, Ofelia. She reveals a locked box in the Mountain that holds a catastrophic entity and orders Gregor to kill Estelle and take the key and box. Armed with scrived armor, Gregor submits.
Summary
Gregor Dandolo revives on a stone slab, coughing up canal water and realizing his mortal wound no longer hurts. In a dim cellar among gray-robed attendants and rippling walls, his mother, Ofelia, soothes him, then stills him with a touch that makes the scrivings in his skull burn.
As clarity returns, Gregor recalls prior conversations about human scriving—fearlessness, memory tampering, even cheating death—and realizes he has died before and been restored. Ofelia admits she learned how to “save” him after losing Gregor’s father and brother, guided by an unnamed benefactor, and that she made binding promises in return.
Exerting control over Gregor’s will, Ofelia extracts and confirms his knowledge: Estelle Candiano stabbed him and holds a locked box hidden in the Mountain. Ofelia says a “devil” resides inside it, a force that once waged a war to end all wars, and insists they cannot allow Estelle to ascend and open it.
Ofelia commands Gregor to fight his way to the Mountain, kill Estelle, and take the key and the box, eliminating any who resist. Moths fill the chamber, and a tall, black-wrapped figure briefly appears, then dissolves into a vortex of moths, hinting at the mysterious ally behind Ofelia’s plans.
The moths unveil a scrived lorica: black armor with an integrated polearm, shield, and bolt caster, centered by a black plate. Under compulsion and purpose, Gregor accepts the mission and declares himself ready.
