Chapter 15
Overview
Brought to Orso’s unused mansion, Sancia and Gregor strike a pact: she will help expose her powerful client and retrieve stolen artifacts in exchange for freedom, and Gregor removes her bond. Clef reawakens, shares a haunting memory of his creation, and reveals he is deteriorating. Sancia steels herself, confronting her past and choosing to continue despite rising stakes.
Summary
Berenice drives Sancia and Gregor to Orso’s little-used mansion within the glowing Dandolo enclaves. Inside, Berenice advises them to clean up for appearances and departs. On a balcony overlooking the opulent district, Gregor raises their bargain: Sancia must help identify and secure evidence against her client and recover Orso’s stolen artifacts. He rejects vengeance, demanding consequences and reform.
Sancia objects that infiltrating founder enclaves is lethal for someone like her. Gregor promises aid, motivated by justice and fear of their enemy wielding near-divine tools. He hands Sancia the key to her restraint; she unlocks the bond. When Gregor alludes to the scars on Sancia’s back and a painful past, she angrily ends the conversation and withdraws.
Alone, Sancia hears Clef’s voice return. She retrieves the key from her boot as Clef confirms he has just awakened. As Sancia catches him up, Clef questions the “partnership” with Gregor and Orso. Sancia presses him about his feat with the gravity rig; Clef explains he can only act within a device’s boundaries, and the gravity rig’s vast, vague scope let him push it to extremes, triggering memories and then a blackout.
Clef shares a memory-link: Sancia experiences a vision of a heated forge and the moment a mind is bound into a key—more than a mere tool, a compendium of scriving knowledge. The vision implies Clef may once have been human, perhaps made by hierophants. Clef admits this awareness is an error in the device, causing progressive breakdown; he believes he is deteriorating and may fail within weeks or months, yet he insists Sancia keep using him so he can live and help.
Sancia, shaken, agrees to rest. Before she bathes, Clef urges compassion for Gregor, calling him another broken person trying to fix the world. In the bathing room, Sancia cleans herself carefully, studies the lashes scarring her back, remembers the shattering of pride under the whip, and reaffirms her resolve to survive and continue.
