Chapter 5

Sancia hides Clef on a cord beneath her jerkin and slips into the morning crowds of Foundryside, noting a corpse and explaining to Clef the brutal reality: Tevanne’s campos are walled, law-bound enclaves for merchant houses, while the Commons lacks laws, services, and safety.

Reaching the pristine Candiano campo wall and its immense scrived bronze door, Sancia debates the risk but tries Clef. When Clef enters the lock, Sancia hears a torrent of “security” queries from the door’s scrived mind. Clef argues semantics, asking how the door pivots and at what force, and convinces it that opening inward does not count as opening.

The door violently pivots inward, tearing its bolts through the wall and revealing clean streets and decorative water within the campo. Terrified by the breach, Sancia flees. Clef boasts, explaining that scrived commands are persuadable and can be duped through confusion and logic.

As they catch their breath, Clef admits uncertainty about how he knows this, showing memory loss. He also senses a scrived plate in Sancia’s head, which he cannot affect, proving he can detect scriving innately. Sancia realizes scrived devices are thinking systems, and that Clef can undermine the reliability that empowers the merchant houses.

Concluding that the houses would eradicate Clef if they learned of him, Sancia resolves to confirm her fears. She decides to take Clef to knowledgeable friends who understand scriving far better than she does.
