Chapter 40
Overview
Sancia breaks through the imperiat’s command by reclaiming her sense of self and purpose. She reaches the sealed box and unlocks it with Clef, defying Estelle. The act critically damages Clef, forcing Sancia to directly engage with his essence as reality seems to blur, setting up an imminent transformation.
Summary
Under the imperiat’s command to stop, Sancia’s mind is reduced to tool-like obedience. Memories of enslavement and fear reinforce the imposed identity—You are a tool—until recollections of choice and solidarity surface: risking herself in the crypt, saving a friend, and love. These memories let Sancia resist and take halting steps toward the box.
Estelle, dagger in hand beside the dying Tribuno and overlooking a burning city, commands Sancia to cease. Sancia pushes through pain and the imperiat’s pressure, asserting that Tevanne is a machine that turns people into things. Step by step, she reaches the safe, grips Clef, and declares she will give Estelle what she deserves, then inserts Clef into the golden lock.
When Sancia turns the key, Clef screams, decaying as he had long warned. In panic and instinct, Sancia focuses on Clef directly, attempting to stabilize him as a scrived object. Engaging with his presence opens something deeper within him, and as she reaches into that essence, the world blurs, signaling a profound shift about to occur.
