Summary
Sloane and Lucian wake after an intense night, trading teasing and tenderness as they limp to the kitchen. Over grilled cheese and foot rubs, they settle on a truce to ask long-avoided questions. Their playful comfort unsettles Sloane, who reminds herself they are not a couple.
On the couch, they reminisce about Sloane’s father, Simon. Pressed about his closeness with Sloane’s parents, Lucian reveals they supported him through college and early adulthood. After resisting, he admits he bought their condo near the oncologist as repayment, insisting it wasn’t heroic. Sloane is moved and thanks him, hugging him despite their history.
During their “peace talks,” Sloane probes Lucian’s control issues around sex and his tattoos covering old scars; he prefers marks he chose. He asks if she’s met her future husband, and Sloane affirms she still wants marriage and children—the “unicorn” kind of love. Lucian, unexpectedly encouraging, believes she’ll get it, while Sloane defends her current life as deliberate, not a consolation prize.
Turning to the past, Sloane asks about the week Wylie had Lucian jailed. Lucian calls it the worst six days of his life, describing turning eighteen in a cell while fearing what his stepfather might do to his mother. Sloane absorbs the pain and her part in it, but they leave apologies unspoken.
A flood of group texts from friends worrying about Sloane’s silence interrupts. To avoid discovery of Lucian’s presence, Sloane claims she’s busy with a septic tank pumping. With the peace talks concluded, Lucian makes clear he wants to continue, and Sloane agrees, choosing more sex over an afternoon of interrogation by friends.
