Overview

Ender joins Rat Army under Rose the Nose but is truly led by toon leader Dink Meeker, who adopts Ender’s innovations and shields his independence. Ender’s daring opening strike reshapes battle tactics, and he regains top rank. Dink warns that teachers are the real enemy and questions the bugger war, planting doubt in Ender. Harassment of Launchies escalates into a skirmish the teachers ignore. The mind game confronts Ender with Peter’s image, intensifying his fear of becoming a killer.

Summary

In a prelude, Colonel Graff orders Major Anderson to design unfair battleroom scenarios to push Ender, despite Anderson’s fears that rigging the game will undermine Battle School. Graff insists Ender’s development outweighs the integrity of the game.

Transferred to Rat Army, Ender meets the crude, status-obsessed commander Rose the Nose and is placed under toon leader Dink Meeker, who actually wanted Ender. Dink rejects Rose’s authority over Ender’s practice and desk, and adopts Ender’s feet-first orientation despite resistance. Under Dink’s independent training, the toon learns Ender’s approach.

In Ender’s first Rat battle, Rose orders a suicidal solo rush. Ender launches instantly, firing between his legs at Centipede Army as they emerge, freezing many before being iced and rebounding out of control; Rat wins, and Dink institutionalizes “instant emergence” practice, shifting schoolwide tactics. Ender falters, then adapts within the toon and returns to first in standings.

Privately, Dink reveals he twice refused command and argues that teachers are the true enemy who pit children against each other; he doubts the bugger threat as political manipulation. Ender maintains belief in the war but carries a seed of doubt, becoming more attentive and wary.

Ender’s Launchy practices are targeted: commanders threaten and older boys harass and attack. Ender uses coordination and nullo physics to extract his small group, injuring several attackers in the scramble. Official reports call it “accidental collisions,” signaling teacher indifference. Other commanders then send older soldiers to protect and learn from Ender’s sessions.

Returning to the mind game, Ender crushes the turret snake, then sees Peter’s bloody face in a mirror; shattering it releases snakes that kill his avatar. Haunted, Ender fears he is a killer the school wants, hating the part of himself that wins wars.
