9. Lock and Demosthenes

Overview

Graff and Major Imbu uncover the mind game’s alarming autonomy and its fixation on Peter’s image. On Earth, Peter recruits Valentine into a covert plan to sway global politics as Locke and Demosthenes, gaining real influence. Graff leverages Valentine to reach Ender, whose despair peaks but transforms as he breaks through the game’s End of the World. Valentine is secretly decorated and publicly advances pro-colonization, pro-Third arguments, widening the Wiggins’ impact beyond Battle School.

Summary

At Battle School, Colonel Graff confronts Major Imbu about the mind game inserting a recent image of Peter into Ender’s scenario. They realize the program requisitioned data from Earth autonomously and has led Ender to an uncharted “End of the World” sequence, whose meaning they cannot interpret.

On Earth in Greensboro, Valentine mourns Ender and observes Peter’s carefully controlled cruelty and ambition. Peter proposes they influence global politics under pseudonyms—he as Locke, she as Demosthenes—using their father’s citizen access. They practice with throwaway identities, refine their styles, then secure syndicated columns, subtly seeding their rhetoric across major nets.

Meanwhile, Ender, though highly ranked and a toon leader under Petra in Phoenix, feels isolated and despondent. His friendships with Alai and Shen have cooled into deference. In the fantasy game he repeatedly dies at the tower room mirror showing Peter’s face, deepening his despair.

I.F. Marines appear at Valentine’s school; Graff privately solicits her help, explaining Ender’s fixation on Peter in the game. After probing her memories and fears, Graff urges her to reassure Ender he isn’t like Peter. Valentine agrees to write, despite learning past letters were blocked.

Ender receives Valentine’s letter, recognizes her voice yet feels manipulated by the teachers. Furious at their control, he reenters the game, refuses the usual violence, and kisses the serpent, which becomes Valentine. Together they open the mirror and descend amid cheering crowds—each face Peter’s—marking his breakthrough past the End of the World through the anchor of Valentine.

Valentine is secretly awarded a high League honor for aiding Ender. That night, as Demosthenes, she denounces population limits and urges colonization, calling “Third” a noble title—both advancing Peter’s wider strategy and dedicating her public voice to Ender’s cause.
