4. Launch

Overview

During the shuttle launch to Battle School, Colonel Graff deliberately isolates Ender by praising his spatial insight, turning the other boys against him. Provoked, Ender defends himself and accidentally breaks a boy’s arm in null gravity. Upon arrival, Graff denies friendship and frames Ender as a necessary tool for humanity’s survival, while staff debate the moral cost.

Summary

The chapter opens with commanders discussing strategy for Ender Wiggin: isolate him enough to preserve creativity, yet ensure he can lead. They acknowledge the need to “break” prodigies to rebuild them for command, foreshadowing the moral costs of their methods.

Ender boards the shuttle with nineteen boys, quietly observing and reorienting himself to null gravity. Colonel Graff arrives, publicly praises Ender’s insight about direction in zero-g, and insults the others, deliberately setting Ender apart. The boys grow hostile, and one unstraps to smack Ender’s head repeatedly.

Timing the next blow, Ender grabs the attacker’s wrist and pulls. In zero-g the boy flips uncontrollably, collides with the bulkhead, and breaks his arm. Ender is sickened, recognizing he intended to hurt the boy even if not so severely; he fears becoming like Peter. Graff warns the launch group not to challenge Ender and enforces the hierarchy he created.

As they dock at Battle School, Ender confronts Graff for betraying his trust. Graff denies being a friend and delivers a blunt creed: individuals are tools when humanity’s survival is at stake, and Ender must excel or be “iced.” Ender leaves, aware that being seen near Graff worsens his isolation.

Afterward, Graff and Anderson debate Ender’s nature and the ethics of their plan. Graff insists Ender is good yet admits they will burden him with the fate of the world, even hoping he isn’t the one. Their exchange underscores the stakes of the bugger war and the calculated shaping of Ender’s path.
