14. Ender's Teacher
Overview
Ender arrives on Eros, is isolated, and masters the simulator until Mazer Rackham reveals himself as his ruthless teacher. Ender learns the buggers’ hive-queen structure and the Little Doctor’s power, then commands his former Battle School allies through relentless, draining battles. In a supposed final exam, Ender destroys the bugger homeworld—only to learn it was the real war. Earth erupts, then accepts a truce, while Ender breaks under the cost.
Summary
Ender reaches Eros and finds the inside-out asteroid disorienting and overcrowded. Isolated from peers, he immerses in astrogation, history, and a powerful simulator, advancing from single-fighter control to fleet command. After he masters the computer’s challenges, a silent old man appears, locks him in, attacks without warning, and declares himself Ender’s enemy and teacher. He is Mazer Rackham, hero of the Second Invasion.
Mazer trains Ender relentlessly: he reveals the bugger hive-mind centered on queens, the capture of Eros from a bugger hive, and the Molecular Detachment Device (“Dr. Device”). He explains that killing a queen renders workers mindless and that future battles will be outnumbered and adaptive. Ender’s simulator shifts to fleet-level command with remote squadron leaders—Bean, Alai, Petra, Dink, and other trusted allies—whom he learns to deploy quickly and independently.
Under Mazer’s escalating scenarios, Ender faces novel traps, attrition, and no-rest schedules; he drives his leaders hard, eroding camaraderie. Petra overextends and breaks under exhaustion, a warning that forces Ender to rotate commanders and shoulder more strain. Nightmares and sleep deprivation mount as he loses ships in every fight but still adapts and wins. Mazer offers no pity, only harsher tests and critique.
Awakened to a “final examination” around a planet, Ender confronts an impossible enemy armada. Choosing to “cheat” the game rather than be cornered, he sacrifices fighters to push a spearhead within range and orders Dr. Device onto the planet itself. The world erupts; the chain reaction annihilates the planet and almost the entire bugger fleet.
In the control room, officers weep and pray; Mazer and Graff reveal the truth: Ender has been commanding real fleets by ansible all along. He destroyed the queens and ended the war. Devastated, Ender condemns their deception and collapses. As Earth’s factions brink on conflict, a truce—accepting the Locke Proposal—prevails. Friends (Alai, Bean, Petra, Dink) visit amid the fading League War; grateful yet broken, Ender renounces command while they affirm their loyalty.
