15. Speaker for the Dead
Overview
Graff is acquitted and becomes Minister of Colonization as the I.F. launches human settlements on former bugger worlds. Valentine persuades Ender to govern a colony far from Peter’s reach. On Ender’s World, Ender discovers a bugger-crafted replica of his Game and a queen’s cocoon, learns their remorse, authors The Hive-Queen as Speaker for the Dead, and begins a lifelong search for a safe world to revive her.
Summary
On a lakeside dock, Graff and Anderson reflect on Graff’s acquittal for Ender’s training and the deaths of Stilson and Bonzo. Graff reveals Demosthenes has “retired,” hints at Locke’s true role, and announces he is becoming Minister of Colonization as humanity prepares to settle empty bugger worlds.
On Eros, Ender remains isolated, watches Graff’s trial footage, and feels the weight of all his killings. Friends depart for Earth to hero’s welcomes while Ender is kept away. Colonists arrive and retool Eros for outward expansion; Ender quietly contributes plans through sympathetic adults but avoids adulation.
Valentine arrives, reveals she is Demosthenes, and explains Peter’s plan to control Ender under the Hegemon’s Council. She blackmailed Peter with proof of his cruelty to secure Ender’s freedom. She offers Ender the governorship of the first colony with Mazer as pilot; Ender accepts, determined to understand the buggers and repay what he took.
On Ender’s World, Ender governs by persuasion and studies bugger works for lessons. While scouting a site for a second colony with the boy Abra, he finds a real-world version of his Fantasy Game, leading to a tower that hides a fertilized hive-queen pupa. Through implanted images and emotions, he learns the buggers’ ignorance of human sentience, their remorse after understanding, and instructions to safely awaken a new queen. Ender vows to carry the cocoon until a peaceful revival is possible.
Ender writes The Hive-Queen as if spoken by the queen and signs it “Speaker for the Dead.” The quiet text spreads; Speakers arise to tell the dead’s full truths. Valentine completes her histories; the aged Hegemon Peter confesses his life by ansible, and Ender writes The Hegemon. Restless, Ender and Valentine travel from world to world—he as itinerant Speaker, she as historian—while Ender keeps searching for a world where the hive-queen can live.
