6. The Giant's Drink

Overview

Commanders argue over Ender’s isolation and order that he remain with his launch to see how he handles group dynamics. In the battleroom, Ender pioneers zero-g techniques, allies with Alai, and helps unify the launch, leading to Alai’s selection as leader. In Free Play, Ender breaks the Giant’s rigged test by killing it, reaches Fairyland, and is disturbed by his own capacity for violence.

Summary

Officers debate Ender’s progress, focusing on his fixation with the Giant’s Drink and its risks. One blames Ender for destabilizing his launch; Graff admits he isolated the boy, but is ordered to keep Ender with the group to observe how he manages the social rift.

In their first battleroom session, the launchies struggle with null gravity and the restrictive suits. Ender experiments, learns to reorient by redefining “down,” and discovers how rebounds and small body adjustments control movement. He notices Bernard’s panic and Alai’s adaptability, storing insights for later use.

Ender approaches Alai, and together they practice coordinated pushes and midair maneuvers. Testing their pistols, they learn that shots freeze suit joints. Ender proposes including Bernard and Shen; the four collaborate and freeze the rest of the group. When Dap arrives, he resets the room and scolds the others for unpreparedness. Socially, Alai becomes the bridge: he calms Bernard and moves freely among everyone. The launch chooses Alai as leader, and the previous in‑group/outcast split dissolves.

During private study, Ender returns to Free Play. After repeated, gruesome losses at the Giant’s rigged guessing game, he rejects the premise, overturns the glasses, and brutally burrows into the Giant’s eye, killing it. A bat greets him and welcomes him to Fairyland. Instead of celebrating, Ender logs off, ashamed and frightened that even in play he resorts to lethal violence, fearing likeness to Peter.
