Overview

Two officials reaffirm Ender’s enforced isolation as he joins his dorm, where Dap orients the Launchies. Ender suffers homesickness but excels in the game room, beating older boys. Targeted by Bernard’s gang, Ender hacks the messaging system to humiliate Bernard, breaking his control and forming an alliance with Shen.

Summary

The chapter opens with two unidentified officials debating Ender’s handling and agreeing his isolation must remain absolute. They worry the shuttle incident may have gone too far but resolve to keep Ender from believing anyone will rescue him.

Ender enters the Launchie dorm and accepts the least desirable bunk without complaint. Dap, the group’s monitor, introduces rules, paths, and the expectation that Launchies will be pushed around. Ender eats alone, meets the cynical older boy Mick, and stifles intense homesickness by mentally doubling numbers and hiding his emotions.

In the game room, Ender studies advanced holographic games, challenges an older boy, and after a quick learning loss, wins two straight, proving his adaptability and strategic skill. This success reassures him that he can learn systems and excel.

Bernard, whose arm Ender broke on the shuttle, builds a petty kingdom and targets Ender with constant harassment. Observing the group dynamics, Ender identifies resentful outliers, especially Shen, whom Bernard mocks as “Worm.”

Ender fights a covert war via desks: he forges anonymous system messages from “God,” then spoofed ones from “Bernard,” humiliating Bernard. Dap pointedly declines to expose the hacker, undercutting Bernard’s authority. Bernard’s faction shrinks to the most vicious loyalists, while the capable boys are freed from his control.

With Bernard contained, Shen sits with Ender at breakfast and they bond. Ender’s overt isolation ends, but he recognizes the conflict is only beginning and continues hardening himself for Battle School’s larger struggles.
